The KC-390 from the Portuguese Air Force demonstrates its adaptability in international exercises.
The Portuguese Air Force introduces its KC-390 transport aircraft on the global stage, showcasing its capabilities during a force projection mission. On October 22, 2023, the Portuguese Air Force marked a historic moment as the Embraer KC-390 undertook its inaugural force projection mission, transporting military personnel and cargo to the Canary Islands, Spain, in support of the multinational Spanish-led exercise Ocean Sky 2023. This exercise also signifies the involvement of Portuguese F-16s in multinational drills.
The KC-390, renowned for its versatility and intercontinental reach, excels in a wide array of missions, both civil and military. Its functionalities include troop and vehicle transport, palletized loads, paratrooper drops, medical evacuations, search and rescue missions, air-to-air refueling, and firefighting support. This adaptability positions the KC-390 as a crucial asset for Portugal and its global military commitments.
Major General Sérgio Roberto Leite da Costa Pereira, Head of the Office of the Air Chief of Staff, underscores the significance of the KC-390’s capabilities, stating, “This comprehensive range of capabilities enables the Portuguese Air Force to meet necessary requirements for participation in military operations under the aegis of alliances Portugal is part of, such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).”
Portugal initiated the incorporation of the KC-390 into its military arsenal in 2019, acquiring five aircraft and a flight simulator. On October 18, 2023, a Portuguese KC-390 completed its maiden operational flight from Brazil to Portugal, forming the newly established 506 Squadron, known as “Rinocerontes.” Over the following years, Portugal anticipates receiving one aircraft annually, completing the Rinocerontes squadron by 2027.
The KC-390, a medium-size, jet-powered, twin-engine utility transport aircraft with a payload capacity of 26 tonnes, is designed and manufactured by Brazilian aerospace company Embraer, attracting international interest. Beyond Portugal, various European air forces, including Hungary, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Austria, are exploring the potential acquisition of KC-390s.
Distinguished by its jet-powered twin-engine configuration, providing heightened speed and increased cargo capacity compared to the C-130 Hercules, the KC-390 also offers air-to-air refueling as a standard feature, enhancing its utility and complementing existing tanker fleets.
The introduction of the KC-390 in international military operations reflects Portugal’s dedication to modernizing its military capabilities and strengthening its role in multinational defense initiatives.
