{"id":481,"date":"2025-11-05T12:41:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T20:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/airmilitarypower.com\/?p=481"},"modified":"2025-11-05T12:41:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T20:41:24","slug":"indonesia-eyes-expanded-airbus-a400m-fleet-for-defense-and-disaster-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/airmilitarypower.com\/?p=481","title":{"rendered":"Indonesia Eyes Expanded Airbus A400M Fleet for Defense and Disaster Response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Adrian Leclerc | Aviation Correspondent<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JAKARTA, Indonesia \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;President&nbsp;<strong>Prabowo Subianto<\/strong>&nbsp;announced Monday that Indonesia is considering the acquisition of&nbsp;<strong>four additional Airbus A400M military transport aircraft<\/strong>, as part of an ambitious effort to modernize the nation\u2019s air capabilities and enhance its humanitarian response capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at a military airbase in Jakarta, where Indonesia\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>first A400M<\/strong>&nbsp;officially joined the fleet, President Prabowo said discussions are underway for a potential follow-on order. \u201cWe might negotiate to sign for four more units,\u201d he told reporters, without specifying a timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesia initially signed a&nbsp;<strong>2021 contract<\/strong>&nbsp;for two A400M aircraft configured for multi-role operations, including airlift, aerial refueling, and humanitarian support. (Photo: Reuters\/Ajeng\u00a0Dinar Ulfiana)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>President Prabowo emphasized that the A400M will play a central role in both domestic and international humanitarian efforts. \u201cThis aircraft will be used to evacuate victims of disasters and to support missions abroad\u2014such as humanitarian relief in Gaza,\u201d he said, adding that Indonesia plans to increase the number of military medical battalions to strengthen such operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built by Airbus Defence and Space, the&nbsp;<strong>A400M<\/strong>&nbsp;is capable of carrying up to&nbsp;<strong>37 tonnes<\/strong>&nbsp;of payload\u2014including vehicles, helicopters, and relief supplies. With an average mission load of 30 tonnes, it can travel approximately&nbsp;<strong>2,400 nautical miles<\/strong>, allowing full coverage of Indonesia\u2019s vast archipelago from the capital, Jakarta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aircraft\u2019s adaptability also extends to&nbsp;<strong>aerial firefighting<\/strong>, as it can be converted into a water bomber capable of dropping&nbsp;<strong>up to 20,000 liters<\/strong>&nbsp;of water or fire retardant in a single pass\u2014an especially valuable asset in a country frequently affected by forest fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prabowo, a former general and now president, has pledged to overhaul Indonesia\u2019s aging military hardware.
